Celebrate Earth Day! – Easy to make Seed Pods

thumbnail6-2

Today is Earth Day!  A day to remember how great the earth is to us and to do something to help make it a better place.  Each year I like to do something to celebrate earth day.  Last year I made re-usable market bags.  This year I wanted to do something that incorporates recycling into the project.  I love to garden and sometimes organizing your seeds and plantings can get confusing.  I also wanted to make a project that would be ideal for children and busy people to use.   My solution involves recycling and fun.  A winning combination.   These little seed pods make great Earth Day gifts.

I have seen seed pods for sale at Home Depot for about $1.50 each and I decided to make my own.  My mother had been saving the toilet paper carton rolls for me and here is how I used them in this project.  I love how my mother helps me in so many ways.  She collects all kinds of stuff for me and never even asks me what I need them for.. Big shout out to my mom.

Supplies:

Empty toilet paper carton

Seed Starting Soil.

Scissors (affiliate link)

Felt tip marker (DO NOT use a regular pen it will tear the tissue paper).

Seeds of your choice

Tissue paper

White tacky glue . (affiliate link)

Seed Pod Collage

To begin gather your supplies. Now you will be cutting one toilet paper roll into 3 equal parts. (Check your seed package to check the depth the seeds need to be planted.) Next you will cut a piece of paper to cover bottom and top of roll. (See collage). Put a line of glue around the roll. Place your tissue paper over the bottom of the roll and secure in place. Fill your roll with potting mixture (seed starting mix). Add your seeds. I usually put 3 or 4 once they begin to grow you can thin plants. Cover with the amount of soil indicated on seed package. Glue another piece of tissue paper over top of roll. Important: Write TOP on this end of the roll. You do not want to plant upside down as this would not be the correct seed depth. Now make sure to label your roll with the type of seeds. That’s it. Now just plant your seed pods level with your garden soil and water. The paper used in these pods are bio-degradable. I especially like planting flowers in flower pots this way. These are super inexpensive to make. Use up a resource that would normally get thrown away and is a fun craft project for kids. Enjoy!

Crochet a Basic Beanie – Easy Peasy!

Basic Beanie

I am starting a series of some of the hats.  I have quite a few beanies/hat tutorials on my YouTube channel.   Here is #1 hat in the series.

I love making crochet hats especially with different characters.  I get most of my requests for different hats from my grandkids.  Since they live in a cold climate they are able to use different hats thru out the season.  From hats inspired from favorite cartoon characters to animals I enjoy making them all.  I wanted to share one of the basic beanie hat I use as a foundation.

Here is a basic beanie to crochet.  I have several suggestions for hook sizes.  Usually I use a medium weight yarn.    I have also included a link to my YouTube video tutorial in case you are more of a visual learner.  If you want to download the free pattern you can download it from my Ravelry Store.

Infant- Size G Hook, Babies Size H hook, Toddler Size I hook. To crochet a beanie for an older child use a size J hook and a medium weight worsted yarn. This makes this the perfect beanie pattern for all sizes. From Baby – adult size. Follow the same pattern.

For adults you can use a size K hook and a heavier weight of yarn (maybe even a chunky weight. The pattern is the same for all sizes. Only the size of hook and weight of yarn changes. This makes this the perfect beanie pattern for all sizes. From Baby – adult size. Follow the same pattern. Happy crocheting

Work Round 1 – 12 the same for both methods.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and thru out) 11 dc into the circle, sl st into top of 3rd ch

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc) dc into same ch, 2 dc in each ch (increase in each ch) for a total of 24 dc’s, sl st into top of 3rd ch

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc) dc into same ch, 2 dc in each ch (increase in eah ch) for a total of 48 dc’s, sl st into top of 3rd ch

Rnd 4 – 12 : ch 3 (counts as dc) dc into next ch, 1 dc in each ch for a total of 48 dc’s in each rnd. Sl st into top of 3rd ch

After round 12, fasten off. Be sure to cut your yarn long enough to be able to sew in your tails. Cutting the yarn too short makes it different to blend in your tail.

Easy to make Yo-Yo’s with the Clover Yo-Yo Maker Tool

I love to make yo-yo’s but I hate how long it takes to make them.  I have made so many of them during my life.  Then a while back I wanted to make a quilt top using the yo-yo’s as little flowers.  My sister bought a Clover Yo-Yo maker.   Using this Clover yo-yo maker tool is a huge difference maker.  I was able to make about 50 yo-yo’s in no time at all.  There are lots of other shapes also, like hearts, butterflies, flowers, besides the round ones.

I just put up a YouTube Video tutorial showing you how easy it is to use this tool.   I hope you will enjoy it.

#Crochet Angel Wing Backpack

One of the great things about having a granddaughter is having someone for whom to make things.   I love coming up with items  I think she would enjoy.   A while back I painted angel wing outlines on a t-shirt and send it to her.  It was a big hit!  It seems a lot of people like wearing angel wings and why wouldn’t you.  I think we would all love to be able to fly and just soar above it all.     Well, maybe we can’t fly but that doesn’t mean we can’t wear wings.   : )

I designed this little #Crochet Angel Wing Backpack to be a fun and pretty item to carry all the things little girls (and big girls) like to take along with them on their daily excursions.   I really hope she likes this backpack.  I can already hear orders coming in.  Sorry I don’t make finished items to sell but I do sell the pattern.   You can purchase the English written pattern here just click on the link :  Crochet Backpack with Wings Purchase Here

The great thing about this little backpack is that you only use basic crochet stitches.  If you can chain, hdc, dc, and work a dc2tog (dc decrease) you are all set.  It’s fun and easy.  My two favorite combinations.  I used pink for the backpack since pink is one of my favorite colors but you can choose a color of your choice.  I do think that white works best for the wings.  You could even embroider some feather outlines on the wings if you like.

I will also be posting a YouTube video tutorial.  I will update the post with the link very soon.  The video should be ready in a couple of days.  I hope you enjoy making this little #Crochet angel wing backpack.  I sure had fun designing and crocheting it.    As always you may sell any items you make from my purchased or free patterns just don’t sell the patterns themselves as all of my patterns are copyright protected.  Also please do not use my photos, please post photos of your finished work to better represent the items you are selling.
