An Easy to Crochet Llama Hat

An easy to crochet Llama hat allows the Llama love continues.  I love making fun and cute crochet hats.  I wanted to make a Llama hat/beanie to go along with my new found love and appreciation of those fun critters.  Llamas provide such beautiful fiber for knitting and crocheting.  I wasn’t able to get my hands on any llama fiber to crochet this hat but I did use a natural fiber, wool.  This hat is made using Fisherman’s Wool from Lion Brand yarns.   The feel is very comfortable and warm.  If you’re allergic to wool there are lots of other great yarn options available.  For the face, I used Vanna’s Choice yarn.

Easy to crochet Llama hat

Originally I sized  this hat to fit most women but adjusting the hook size can help with sizing.  For example,  I originally made the hat using a 5.0mm hook (H hook) but found it to be a bit tight on my head.  I think that an H hook would be perfect for children.   To adjust for women I suggest using a J hook (6.0mm) and for men a K hook.

Supplies needed: 

Crochet Hook

Lion Brand Yarn  (1 skein) Fishermen’s Wool yarn  (Affiliate Link)

A Small amount of Brown yarn.  I used Vanna’s Choice in Chocolate color Vanna’s choice yarn  (Affiiate link)

scissors

Stitches used:

hdc – half double crochet

dec = decrease

st – stitch

sl st –  Slip stitch

ch – chain

Rep – Repeat

embroidery – back stitch

Size:  Fits most women.

To begin:  Magic circle,  ch 2, 8 hdc into circle, pull size shut (8hdc)

Rnd 2:  ch 2, sl st into first hdc, 2 hdc into each st (16 hdc)

Rnd 3:  ch 2, 2hdc into first hdc, *2 hdc, 1 hdc,* rep from * to * all thru out rnd, 1hdc in last hdc, sl st into first hdc (24hdc)

Rnd 4:  ch 2, 2hdc in first hdc, *2hdc, 1 hdc in next 2 st*, rep from * to * to end of rnd, sl st into first hdc (32 hdc)

Rnd 5:  ch 2, 2hdc in first hdc, *2 hdc, 1 hdc in next 3 st*, rep from * to * to end of end of end, sl st into first hdc (40 hdc)

Rnd 6: ch 2, 2hdc in first hdc, *2 hdc, 1 hdc in next 4 hdc*, rep from * to * to end of rnd,  sl st into first hdc ( 48 hdc)

Rnd 7: ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, *2hdc, 1 hdc in next 5 hdc*, rep from * to * to end of rnd, sl st into first hdc (56 hdc)

Rnd 8: ch 2, 2hdc in first hdc, *2hdc, 1 hdc in next 6 hdc*, rep from * to * to end of rnd, sl st into first hdc (64 hdc)

Rnd 9-  25:  ch 2, hdc in ea st all the way around, sl st into first hdc.  After last round fasten off, sew in tail.

Please note:  You can try the hat on as you work along and work as many rounds as you need for your desired size.

The hat should measure approximately 9 – 9 1/2 inches for women.

Ears:  (Make 2)

To begin leave approximately 12 inch tail (this will be used to sew your tails to your hat).  slip loop

Chain 13:  1hdc in each st beginning on the 2nd chain from the hook

Row 2- 3: chain 2,  1 hdc in each stitch

Row 4:  ch 2, hdc decrease over the first 2 stitches, hdc in each st, hdc decrease over the last 2 stitches

Row 5: ch 2, hdc decrease over the first 2 stitches, hdc in each st, hdc decrease over the last 2 stitches

Row 6:  ch 2, ch 2, hdc decrease over the first 2 stitches, hdc in each st, hdc decrease over the last 2 stitches

Row 7:  ch 2, hdc decrease over the first 2 stitches,  hdc decrease over the last 2 stitches

Row 8:  ch 2, hdc decrease, fasten off.   sew in tail

Sewing ears to Hat :

1. Thread the beginning tail onto a yarn needle.
2.  Fold lower ear edges to meet in the center.  tack the ears down
3.   Sew ears onto hat.  Use the picture of finished hat as a reference.  You can use the outline of the hat rounds as a guide.
4. Sew in tails

To make the hair there are 2 different ways to do this.  (Please see YouTube video tutorial).

I threaded a very long strand of Fishermen’s wool yarn onto a yarn needle.  I made a knot on the end.  Now thru the inside I pulled out the yarn (making sure to catch a hdc post to keep yarn in place).  Next, I put my needle back inside the hat creating a loop.  The larger the loop the longer the loop (hair) of your llama will be.  I think brought the needle back out and created a small stitch.   I repeat this process until all the hair is in place.

Face Embroidery: 

To embroider the face of the Llama I threaded the chocolate color yarn from Vanna’s Choice onto my yarn needle.  I used the rounds as a guide for placing my eyes.  I chose to make a sleeping eye outline on my Llama Hat.  It seems easier than doing an entire eye and looks a whimsical.

Use the photo of the finished hat as a guide for placement.   I used a simple backstitch to outline the eyes.  I did it free hand but if you like you can use a fabric marker.  DO NOT use a permanent ink as it can show thru the stitches.   I recommend using a marker or pen that has the ink that washes out when it is wet.    You can purchase them here on Amazon Fabric Pen (affiliate link)  or at your local’s  Michaels store,  Joanns, or Hobby Lobby as well as other craft and sewing supply stores.
