Autumn is here and it’s Pumpkin Hat time

Pumpkin hat time is here.  It seems everywhere I look traces of Autumn are finally arriving in my neck of the woods.  OK, so I live in San Diego, California and there aren’t many signs of the seasons changing.  However, stores are now decorated with items that remind us it’s Autumn.  Pumpkins are making an appearance in windows and advertisements.  Halloween is just around the corner.  Pumpkin spice lattes are brewing and I am crocheting pumpkin hats.

Crochet Pumpkin Hat

I decided to design a pumpkin hat that can be worn by babies to adults.   I used medium weight acrylic yarn for my hat.  The hat in the photo I used an H hook however by adjusting the hook size the hat can be made for various sizes.  Here is a suggestion for hook sizes.  Please remember that everyone crochets with a different tension and these are just suggestions.   I used a fpdc (front post double crochet) stitch to simulate the ridges on a pumpkin.  You can choose any shade of orange and green for your hat.  You could even choose a ten or brown color as pumpkins come in a variety of colors.

Pumpkin Hat Hook suggestions:

Infant- Size G Hook

Babies Size H hook Toddler Size I hook.

Toddler Size I hook.

Older children and teenagers  J hook

Women – J hook  (I use a J hook for my hats and they fit well)

Men – Hook K

This makes this the perfect beanie pattern for all sizes. From Baby – adult size. Follow the same pattern. The pattern is the same for all sizes. Only the size of hook changes.

Scissors

Yarn needle

Orange medium weight yarn (approx. 3 oz).

Small amount of green yarn for stem

To begin Pumpkin hat:  (with green color)

Magic circle,  ch 3 (counts as dc here and thru out pattern), 11 dc, pull shut, sl st into 3rd chain.  Change to orange color BEFORE completing your slip stitch  See photo:

Changing yarn colors in crochet

Row 2:  ( change to orange color)  ch 3, dc into same st, *[dc, fpdc] into next st, 2dc*, rep from * to * to end of row, sl st into 3rd ch

For rows 3 and 4 you will be working an increase in each stitch.  When you increase in the stitches that at fpdc you will first your first dc as you normally do and the second increase as a fpdc.   (see photo collage below)

Row 3:  ch 3, dc into same st, 2dc in next 2 st, [dc, fpdc] in next st, (continue working an increase in each stitch, in fpdc stitches you will work your first dc normally and the second dc as a fpdc in the same stitch.   See photo. )  sl st into 3rd ch

Row 4:  ch 3, dc in ea dc st, work an increase in the fpdc post following instructions in row 3 (see photo)… first stitch of increase is worked as a regular dc st, the second stitch of the increase is worked as a fpdc stitch (in same stitch), repeat all the way across the row,  sl st into 3rd chain

Row 5 – 12: ch 3, dc in ea dc st, fpdc in ea fpdc st, sl st into 3rd ch, fasten off.

Stem:

(with green yarn)  Magic circle, ch 3, (counts as dc here and thru out), 5 dc into circle, pull shut, sl st into 3rd ch,

Rows 2 – 4: ch 3, hdc in ea st, sl st into 3rd ch, fasten off after last row leaving long tail to sew onto top of hat.

Finishing:   lightly stuff green stem and sew onto top of hat.  Sew in all tails.  Enjoy!
