Crochet This Easy Bag Made using Granny Squares

I decided to crochet this easy bag which is made using granny squares.  Summer is almost here and so are the outings we all enjoy.  If you enjoy granny squares here is another great project.  You will need to make 3 granny squares with 12 rounds each.  (Each square measure 18″ square). You make make it with any colors of your choice, or all one solid color.  Please note this is a large bag.  It measures about 25 inches by 25 inches without handles.   I am working on a video tutorial and it will be available on my youtube channel on  4/ 15/13 after 7pm PST.

Materials needed to make your granny square crochet bag:

Cotton yarn in your choice of color
Size J/10 6.00mm Hook
Yarn needle
1 Button
scissors

To begin basic Granny square:

ch 4, sl st into 1st ch to form ring
Rnd 1:  ch 3 (counts as 1dc here and thru out), 2dc into ring, *ch 3, 3dc into ring* repeat from * to * 3 more times until you have 4 sets of 3dc, ch 3, sl st into 3rd ch…sl st over next 3 ch, (to get into ch-3 sp, this is the corner space)
Rnd 2: [ch 3, 2dc into ring, ch 3, 3dc] all into same ch-3 sp(corner made), *ch 2, [3dc, ch 3, 3dc] all into next ch3 sp(corner made),* repeat from * to * 2 more times, ch 2, sl st into top of 3rd ch, sl st over next 3 ch, (to get into ch-3 sp) BEFORE pulling out yarn, change colors and pull out new color and complete sl st
Rnd 3:  [ch 3, 2dc, ch 3, 3dc] into same ch 3 sp(corner made),* ch 2, 3dc into next ch-2 sp, ch 2, [3dc, ch 3, 3dc] in next ch 3 sp(corner made)*  repeat from * to * until all 4 corners and middle 3dc clusters are formed, sl st into top of 3rd ch, sl st over 3 ch to get into ch-3 sp (corner sp)
For your remaining rounds 4 – 12:, you will work 3dc, ch 3, 3dc for each corner space  followed by 2 chains, for the ch-2 spaces in between corners you will work 3dc into ea ch-2 sp, followed by 2 ch.. At the end of each rounds you will sl st into top of 3rd ch, slip stitch 3 into next 3 ch to get into the ch3 sp (corner) and continue your rounds.  I hope this makes sense.
Make 3 squares with 12 rounds.  If you want a smaller bag, you can omit the number of rounds desired.
Now to sew it all together.

Sewing your Granny square crochet bag together:

To sew granny squares:  Sew 2 edges of 2 squares together.  With right sides facing you. The bottom of bag is the square that is on the left hand side.  Beginning your sewing on the middle chain of the corner ch 3 stitches.  See photo.

Now sew your second granny square.  Your squares should look like a Capital L (or V depending on how you see it.)  See photo.

Now you will fold your squares to sew the remaining edges. This is how it looks when all corners are folded.
(this picture was taken BEFORE  I sewed any edges)

Now sew the second edge of your first square.. fold over and sew up to the middle point and sew.  Remember to begin in the 2nd ch (of the ch3 ) of the corners.  Wrong sides should be facing each others.  The right sides of the square are on the outside. Make sure you don’t sew up the lower layer.

Now sew up the other edge.

Now you will attach the handle.  Attach yarn to the top (left) corner of your square.  You will attach in the 1st dc of your corner group.  1sc in each ch, you will do 3dc in the corner ch-3 sp (do not go into the chain here, go under the chain to give added strength.)  continue working 1 sc into ea remaining, work 2sc into last ch for added strength.

Rnd 2 – 11:  ch 2, 1dc into ea ch, ch chain turn work, repeat for 11 rounds.)
Now attach your handle to the a corner square.. wrong sides are facing each other.  Be careful not to twist handle.
Optional Button hole loop:   Attach yarn to one of the V section.  Ch 8, sl st back into same sp.  Fasten off sew in tails.
Sew on button to other side of bag.
Now all you need to do is sew in all your tails.  All Done!  Remember you can make the bag smaller or larger by adding or reducing rounds.
If you want to line the bag be sure to read my next post and you will learn how to do that.
