Basic Crochet Cables

Learn to Crochet Cables

Have you admired crochet cables?  Want to learn to crochet them? Well you are in luck.  Todays post is all able crochet cables.

Are you wanting to take your crochet skills up a little?  One of the many ways to do that is to learn new stitches and techniques.   Cables seem to be a favorite of people.   I must admit that I rarely crochet cables since I knit.  Usually my cable patterns all come from knitting.  However, on occasion I will use a cable to jazz up little sweater or maybe afghan or scarf.   Making cables is a good way to embellish a project.  Here I will show a basic cable but the same techniques would be used for more complicated cables.  This is just a basic cable with only the two strands that twists or criss crosses over itself.   In this post you can learn to crochet basic cables

I made this sample using a base of single crochet.   You can do double crochet just adjust your beginning chains.  Your pattern should give you the amount of chains you will need to begin with to create your design.   Here I worked 3 pattern repeats.  I used multiples of 6 chains plus 3 at the end.   It is important to have stitches that separate the cables and allow them to pop.  In this sample I do this by using single crochet stitches .

To begin your Crochet Cables:

Chain 21

row 1:  sc in each chain beginning on 2nd chain from hook

row 2 – 3: ch 1, turn work, sc in each st

row 4: ch 1, turn work, sc in next 2 st, *fpdc (front post double crochet) in the third row below your current working row, (be sure to pull up your yarn to the height of the current row), sc in next st, fpdc (in third row below your current row), sc in next 3 st*, rep from * to * 3 more times., sc in remaining st.

Row 5: ch 1, turn work, sc in each st

Row 6: Repeat row 4

Row 7:  ch 1, turn work, sc in each st

Row 8:,  ch 1, turn work, sc in next 2 st, *fpdc into loop of 2nd fpdc from row 4 (skip the first fpdc, this creates the twist), sc in next st, fpdc into the first fpdc from row 4 (the one you skipped), sc in next 3 st*, rep from * to * 3 more times, sc in last remaining st

Repeat rows 4 – 8 until you have the desired height.   You can use any type of yarn or hook (appropriate to weight size) .   If you are following a pattern be sure to use the hook size and yarn weight indicated.  You will also want to make a gauge swatch to ensure proper gauge.    That all you do for a simple crochet cable.

If you are a visual learner or prefer to see a short video tutorial I have uploaded one to my YouTube channel.  The link is on the next  page.  o  I find it easier to do something new when I have seen it demonstrated first.  It helps to put all the puzzles pieces in place for me.  I have also uploaded a video to teach you how to keep your crochet edges straight.

If you’re having trouble keeping your edges straight please watch my video:  How to crochet straight rows below.

I make every effort to ensure there are no errors.  On occasion you may find an error, if you do please let me know by posting a comment so that I can correct it.

Glad you included the video. I can’t read patterns yet. I’m working on it.
