It’s Fast, Easy and Beautiful! Crochet Shell and Post stitch pattern

It’s Fast, Easy and Beautiful!  Introducing the crochet shell and post stitch pattern.  With warmer weather, I’m looking for patterns that will not be quite as heavy and warm but still look beautiful.  This stitch is ideal for those warmer days.  I’ve used this pattern to make lighter weight baby blankets using a weight 3 yarn of even baby weight yarn.    The pattern is so easy to make and works up very quickly.  I also like the fact that after your first row you can work this pattern while watching tv, or listening to music.  Once your first row is done there really isn’t any counting so it’s perfect for crocheting on the go.

Crochet Shell & Post Stitch

You can use any weight yarn and hook size as long as they are appropriate for each other.  Yarn labels will give you a suggested hook size for each weight yarn. (I know they do in the USA, not sure about other countries).

Directions for the Shell and Post Stitch:

This pattern is worked in multiples of 6 plus 3

I have worked 3 repeats in the sample.  I crocheted 18 chain (6×3=18) plus 3 = 21.  I began with 21 total chains for the 3 repeat sample.

Row 1:  In 6th chain from hook [dc2, ch 1, dc2], *skip next 2 chains, 1dc, skip next 2 chains, [2dc, ch 1, 2dc], * repeat from * to *, last dc is worked in third chain

Row 2:  chain 3 (counts as dc), turn work, *In next ch-1 space (over previous rows shell) [2dc, ch1, 2dc], skip next 2 chains, dc (over previous rows dc)*, repeat from * to *, last dc is worked over 3rd chain (turning chain)

Repeat Row 2 until you have your desired height, fasten off, sew in tails.

It’s as easy as that.  Easy Peasy!   I hope you try this stitch when working various projects.  On the photo I show the right hand side posts worked as fpdc for added texture.. the second posts were regular dc.  Either way will work for you.  If you choose to work the fpdc (front post double crochet) remember that on alternating rows those posts will be working with a bpdc (back post double crochet).

Try this stitch when you want to make something that is lighter weight.  It’s ideal for summer evening shawls which I love to crochet using cotton yarn.
