Crochet Carrot Bag

Crochet Carrot for Easter

Crochet Easter Basket Carrot

Crochet Carrot Bag

Easter is almost here and for many that means Easter Egg Hunts and Easter Baskets.  There are so many baskets to choose from on the market but how about crocheting something a little different.   A few years ago I crocheted this little orange carrot bag.  One of the reasons I really  like it is that kids can use it after Easter is over.   I think it is a great Easter Projecter – Crochet alternative to traditional basket. During a Easter egg hunt the bag can be used to store your Eggs.  After the holiday it can be used to carry small toys.

Materials Needed to make your crochet Carrot Bag:

Crochet Hook  I / 9  5.5mm

scissors

yarn needle

Orange yarn ( approx 3 oz)  Medium weight acrylic (I used carrot by #RedHeartSuperSaver)

Green yarn (small among) Medium weight acrylic

Small button

(Optional)  Small piece of yellow felt for organic sticker and fabric marker.  If you add the sticker you will also need orange thread.

(In this pattern I only chain 1 to go up to my next row even though I am using a hdc stitch).   You will be turning your work on every row.

Carrot (Make 3 in Orange color)

Instructions to make your crochet carrot bag:

To begin:  Chain 8,  hdc in each st beginning in 2nd ch from hook.

Row 2 – 3: ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st, 2hdc in last st

Row 4 – 5: ch 2, hdc in ea st

Row 6:  ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in ea st, 2hdc in last st

Row 7: ch 1, hdc in ea st

Row 8 – 9: ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in ea st, 2hdc in last st

Row 10 – 18: ch 1, hdc in ea st

Row 19 – 25: ch 1, hdc2tog (decrease), hdc in ea st, hdc2tog (decrease) over last 2 st , fasten off after last row.

Sewing together:   Lay one carrot shape on top of the other.  Sew one edge to the other edge of second piece.  Sew other carrot piece onto remaining edge.  Sea along the outer edges leaving an opening along one edge of approximately the size you want your opening.

Handle strap (orange yarn):  chain 50,  hdc in ea ch beginning in 2nd cha from hook

Row 2 – 4:  ch 1, hdc in ea st, fasten off after last row.

Sew handle onto carrot:  Fold handle strip in half.. pin in place along top edge openings.  (with open side to the center )  See photo of finished item below.   Tuck handle into the carrot.  Sew the edges to the carrot.  You can sew all 3 layers together at the same time if you prefer.  Turn bag inside out.

To finish edge of opening.  Attach yarn anywhere along top edge.  Chain 1, work in a row of sc along the top edge.  (It doesn’t have to be perfect.) fasten off.

Button attachment:  (This is an optional step.  You don’t have to add a button.)  Attach orange yarn along one of the top edge opening (I center it)  chain 3, sl st back into beginning st.  Fasten off, sew in tails.   Sew button onto opposite edge.  This loop with become your button hole.

For green leafs:  (In green yarn)  You have 2 options:

1)You can either cut strips of yarn (approx 14 inches) and just attach to the edge (wide edge) or you can attach your yarn as a fringe.  Use as many strips as you like.

2)  attach your green yarn along the wide edge.  Chain 20, sc into each chain beginning in 2nd chain from  hook, sl st into 1st ch, fasten off.  Repeat as many times as necessary to cover your edge.

Sew in all your tails.

Optional Organic sticker:  Cut out a small oval of felt.  I chose yellow but you can choose whatever color you like.  With a fabric marker just write “Organic” or whatever you want to write.  You can even put the childs name on it.  Sew the sticker onto the outside of your carrot bag.   Enjoy!
