Summer is a great time to crochet and this fun, crochet summer handbag is the perfect project. I made this crochet summer handbag using t-shirt yarn. I used a product from Hoooked Zpagetti. I was given this product when I attended the Association for Creative Industries (Formerly CHA – Crafts and Hobby Association). Learning of new products if always a highlight of the event.
There are many video tutorials for making your own t-shirt yarn. You can find tarn (t-shirt yarn) at many stores. I’m not beginning to see this material used in many different projects including handbags, rugs and even some stuffed animals. I hope you enjoy this project. I have also included a link to the video tutorial for visual learners.
Materials/Supplies:
T-shirt material (I used Hoooked Zapagetti). The cone I used had 120meters (131 yards) but there was material left over.
Scissors
Crochet Hook 12mm
Stitch marker
Measure tape
Beads (optional)
Blunt tapestry needle with x-large eye
2 Metal split rings (for handles) You can use a different style if you prefer
To begin: Chain 16
Row 2: ch 1, sc into each st
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 18 inches. Fasten off and sew in tails.
Fold piece in half and join both edges using a slip-stitch. (You may sew together if you prefer). You folded piece should measure approximately 9 inches in height and 10 1/2 inches in width. Use your large blunt tapestry needle to sew in all tails.
Handles:
Make a slip loop (leaving a tail to be sewn in later). Flip your split ring onto the slip loop. Chain 1, single crochet into the ring to enclose the ring. Now chain 40. When you get to the last chain insert you second split ring over the last chain.. and complete 1 more chain (enclosing the split ring). Single crochet into the ring (to enclose ring) Now you will work 1 slip stitch into each chain (this will make your piece wider). Fasten off after the last chain.
Fringe: (Optional)
Cut strips of t-shirt yarn approximately 30 inches long. You can add as many strips of fringe as you like. I added my fringe following a V outline in the front of the bag. I left the bag of the bag without fringe. You can add fringe along the bottom or top or you can omit the fringe completely.
I added plastic beads from Dollar Tree store and made a knot to keep them from falling off. I used my blunt tapestry needle to add my beads.
Sew in any remaining tails being care NOT to go into the fabric itself but rather into spaces. Enjoy!
