CAL (Crochet along) announcement – Baby Layette Set

layette

I absolutely love making baby items.  It just makes me so happy to think of a little baby wearing something that I made with love especially for them.  I know to some the idea of a handcrafted baby layette may seem quaint or old-fashioned but I love it.  If that makes me weird so be it.  I wanted to share this little layette set with my youtube viewers.   Beginning on June 24, 2015 I will begin a crochet along series for this baby set.   The pattern is available for download as a PDF file from LeisureArts.com.  The purchase price is currently set to $5.99 for the set.  (US Dollars).   I wanted to give everyone advance notice so that you will have time to purchase your pattern and supplies if you would like to participate.  I have received permission from Leisure Arts to be able to film and share the video tutorials for this little set.  Purchasing the pattern is optional (you can still view the videos) but it is a great things to have for your own files and it will help you learn to read patterns as well.

I am not being paid for provide these videos.  The only form of compensation I will receive is a small commission from the pattern purchase if you purchase thru the following link:   Baby Layette Pattern     I hope you will consider purchasing the pattern as this small amount of commission will help to offset some of the expense of providing the free video tutorials.

The pattern contains the materials list for the set.  It also breaks down what will be needed by item in case you don’t want to make every item.  The set includes the the bonet, sacque/sweater, booties, and the blanket.  The size is for approximately 6 – 9 months old and the blanket measure 43 inches square.

If you would like to participate in this Crochet Along you still have time to purchase your pattern and supplies.

I think this set makes a beautiful gift for baby showers or for that special little baby in your life.    I look forward to having all of you join me in this CAL.

Hugs and Kisses,

Yolanda

Crochet this fast and easy Football Can Cozy.  It makes a fun gift.   You can also choose to your team colors.

Here is an Easy to Crochet Father’s Day gift.   A can cozy.  It works great for soda and beer cans as well as for beer bottles.    I used it using brown and white as a traditional football colors but you could also use your team colors.   I have also made these and embroidered the words  Dad or Initials instead of adding the laces.

This can cozy uses only basic crochet stitches and works up super fast.   It’s also a great way to use up your yarn scraps.  I have also included the link to a free Video Tutorial for visual learners.  You will find the link on the last page of this post.

Flower Friday – Layer flower

Screen Shot 2015-06-04 at 3.10.53 PM

Hello everyone, so sorry I’ve been MIA for the last week.  I was just finishing up on a major project and it consumed most of my time.

Today I want to share another flower with you.  It is super easy to make.  You can make 2 or 3 layers or even just one.  I just lay them on top of each other and use them to embellish other items such as the flip flops in the photo above.  Summer will be here soon and it’s time to dress up those flip flops.  I hope you enjoy this project.

Flower: Use different size hooks for different sizes .  I used a size G hook.  The small flower in the center is worked separately and then sewn onto the 2 layer flower.

To begin: 2-layer flower G Hook (Medium weight yarn)

Chain 5, sl st into 1st ch
Round 2: ch 4, (3 ch  counts as 1dc), *sc into circle, ch 3*, rep from * to * 3 more times, ch 3, sc into 1st ch
Round 3: * sl st into the ch-3 space (to work petals inside these spaces), ch 3, 8 dc into ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc into same ch-3 space * repeat until you have completed all 5 petals, sc into 1st st.   (If you like the way this looks you can fasten off after this layer and you’re done).
Push petals to the front.
Ch 4: *ch 5, sc into next sc,* rep until you have worked all 5 petals. You will be creating ch-5 loops behind the first row of petals.
Ch 5: (change colors – optional) ch 4, [11 tbc in next ch-5 sp, ch 4, sc into same ch-5 sp], sl st into next ch-5 sp,* rep from * to * in each petal, ch 4, sl st into 1st st

Top Layer is made separately and sold on top :

Small 5 petal flower:   G hook

Ch 4, sl st into 1st ch to form circle
Round 2: *ch 3, 2dc (into circle) sc into circle* rep from * to * until you have worked 5 petals, sc, fasten off.

You can sew this small flower on top of your other 2 layer flower.

New way to Yarn-Bomb.. well not exactly but totally Fun

20150425_135254

Have you seen all those photos of yarn bombing?  I think it’s such a fun idea.  However since I am limited in my time I decided to do my own version.  I call it my “Project in a bag”   What I am doing is going around my city and other cities as I travel and hanging up these little bags.  They contain 1 of my printed patterns, 1 plastic crochet hook (in the size needed for the project) and 1 skein of yarn.  I am only choosing projects/patterns that use only 1 skein of yarn.  The supplies have been purchased by me and are not sponsored by any company so you will have different brand yarns in the bags.   I am also attaching my business card with a note on back that reads, “You found my gift.  Enjoy it!”  .

I left one of my little bags at a local park (they are in plastic to protect from water) and waited in the car to see if anyone would find it.  A lady walking her dog found it within five minutes.   She took it off the fence read the note and smiled ear to ear.  Her friend then read the note too.  They did a high five and left smiling ear to ear.  I love spreading yarn happiness.  : )

Be on the look out you may just find one of my bags in a town where you live. If you would like to enter for a chance to win one of my bags. (I will be giving away 10) then please do the following;   1) Become a member of this blog and 2) Leave a comment. Winner will be chosen in 2 weeks. The giveaway is open worldwide.  I know this isn’t the regular way to yarn bomb but I want to spread yarn happiness all around me.   Good luck.

UPDATE:  Winners have been selected and notified

Product Review Time- Kristin Omdahl’s new Book and yarn

This is a product review of Kristin Omdahl’s new book “Crochet So Lovely” and her yarn ” Be so Fine”

kristin book

This past weekend I was so blessed to be able to attend Stitches West.  I posted about it here.  The experience was really great and the best part was all the people I got to meet.  It was so nice to finally put a face to these people’s names.  Oh sure, I had seen their videos, read their books etc., but finally meeting someone in person makes it real.   One person who I have long admired is the fabulous Kristin Omdahl.  If you haven’t heard of her she is a fantastic designer.  She designs both knit and crochet items.  I have purchased previous books and have really enjoyed making shawls (I made 3 so far) and so it was a real treat to meet her.   Guess what?  She is as nice and gracious in person.   You see Kristin has always been my friend…. let me explain what I mean by that… She has been my friend in my head only, hahaha.  I’m sure we all have those people we think if we met we would be friends.   I’m so happy to report that yes, now I think we will be friends.

Anyway, back to the review.  Kristin Omdahl had a booth at Stitches West 2015 held in Santa Clara, California.  Her booth was so serene and lovely.   What I really liked about her booth was that she had displayed finished garments to give you an idea of what could be made with the yarn.   She sells her yarn which is 100% bamboo.  It is spun, milled and hand dyed right here in the USA.   She had the yarn organized in little bags.  Either silver or gold bags.  Depending on which bag you chose that yarn would be enough to complete the projects that were displayed above them.  Silver would give you enough to complete shawls and other items and the gold bags had enough for smaller items such as cowls. The colors were so rich and luscious.  The yarn is super soft.   Kristin has personally selected each yarn color and type to ensure they meet her strict standards.  I would totally recommend this yarn.    I purchased the Amyethst.  If you follow me on youtube and facebook you will know that my favorite colors is Purple (and shades of purple) and Pink (and shades of pink, including Magenta).  I would have bought the bag just for the yarn but she also included along with the yarn a little package of “wrapture” which is her no rinse delicate wash.  The fragrance is jasmine.  With the purchase she also includes a pattern e-book which normally retails for $6.99.   You can find instructions (and coupon) code for download on the back of the label.  She also includes washing instructions on the label.  To purchase yarn you can either go to her site  styledbykristin.com  (lots of other goodies available on the site) Click here for yarn purchase.     She also has an etsy store  Kristin’s Etsy store where she also sells the yarn and project bags.  (P.S.- the project bags are made with fabric that has the drawings/art done by Kristin).

Not only was she selling her yarns, project bags and other goodies  she also had her new book available for purchase.  The title of the book is “Crochet so Lovely”.   It retails for $24.99 which is a great value when you consider it contains instructions, diagrams and photos for 21 beautiful lace designs.   That’s just a little over $1 per pattern.  That’s a bargain.  The book has very clear easy to understand written instructions along with diagrams and beautiful color photos.  If you purchase thru her etsy store she will sign each copy and ship internationally.  The book isn’t available in the UK yet thru amazon so this is a great way to order and get a signed book.

I highly recommend both the book and the yarn.  This is quality stuff and I love to share with everyone when I find a good deal and good products.   Please visit her sites and take a look at all of the goodies.  I’m sure you are going to love them.
