Learn to Sew Crochet Granny Squares Together

In this post I will teach you how to sew (seam) crochet pieces together.   Here I will demonstrate with a granny square but the same methods apply for other pieces as well.

I love crocheting and knitting but the one thing I really don’t enjoy that much is when I need to seam (sew) pieces together.  I know we’ve all been there.  We have just completed our last granny square and now the daunting task of sewing them all together is before us.  Well.. that and sewing in tails is another drudgery I would love to avoid.

If I had a magic wand I would just magically make all those tails go away and have all my pieces magically sew themselves together.   But alas no such luck.

Online Courses coming soon!

I can’t believe it’s actually happening.  Thanks to everyones support and encouragement I have taken a giant leap.  (OK, it’s giant for me)  As many of you may know I’m not exactly what you would call a “techy”.  As a matter of fact I really struggle with this aspect of sharing my content with everyone.  You see I don’t come from a technology background and sometime I feel totally out of it.   There are times when I listen to people speaking about their sites and use terms like SEO traffic optimization, shopping-cart,  updates,  SSL, etc… to me it might as well be Greek.   I must admit that technology has always kinda scared me.

I don’t know if it’s part of getting older and being used to old school methods.  For example I still actually mail people letters.  Seriously, I love getting a letter in the mail.  Greeting cards are even better.  So, when technology has been a difficult transition.  However, you know what they say innovate or die.  I don’t want to die…… so I have done it.   I have joined the platform called “New Kajabi”    This has been a huge investment for me.   So far it seem easy enough for even me to use it.  What it will allow me to do is something that I have been working on for a very long time.  Create courses that are more detailed, better organized and easily accessible.  I have been searching for a platform that would allow me to do this and reach more people.  This is something that I am really excited about.   This is how it will work:  (OK, this is how I want it to work, fingers crossed.)   I create courses and projects you have requested and upload them to the platform.   I can organize them as single projects of complete courses with several modules.   The modules can include written patterns,  video tutorials,  user feedback, and tons of other great features such as subscriptions/memberships.

How to Measure Gauge; What is it? Why should I care?

Tool for measuring gauge on knit and crochet

Tool to Measure Gauge on crochet and knit items

Learn to Measure Gauge

In this post you will learn how to measure gauge.  Have you ever wondered what gauge was and why you should care?   I get a lot of people that say they never make a gauge swatch and that they really don’t understand gauge.   If you have been fortunate enough to create garments that fit without making a gauge swatch let me say that one day your luck may run out.  What probably happened is that you were working very close to the gauge indicated on the pattern.   Lucky you!

Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows a knitter or crocheter makes per inch using a certain yarn and needles or hook.  Since not everyone crochet or knits with the same tension (this affects gauge), it is a very good idea to make a gauge swatch before beginning a new project.   There are items that you can crochet or knit in which gauge isn’t critical.  However if you are working on certain items like garments it is important to be able to match the gauge that is specified in the pattern instructions.  This will ensure that your item/garment is the same size as the size the designer intended when designing the item and that the amount of yarn required (as specified in pattern) is sufficient to complete your project.

Online Courses, New Book and other news!

Wow, is all I can say.  Things have really been crazy here.  I have so many projects going on that my head is spinning.  I’m sorry I haven’t been able to update this blog in a couple weeks.

Update1:  My Crochet Book “Animal Lovie Blankets”  Is now also available at Hobby Lobby and a smaller versions are now available at Wal-Mart.  That is super exciting since my granddaughter saw them and was so proud of Grandma Yoli.  It makes my heart happy to see her smiling face.   You can purchase your copy at:  Joannes, Hobby Lobby, Walmart and Michaels.    It is also available as a digital download from Leisure Arts.  Click here to purchase.

Update 2:  I am in the processing of writing down a lot of my patterns.  It has been a slow process since I now have about 550 of them to write down.. (test) and photograph the items.  Hopefully that will be done within the next year.  I want to be able to make them available for everyone.

Update 3:  I am also working on the videos for a Crochet Course.  I asked everyone a few weeks ago what they wanted to learn.   So far I have heard;

*  Reading Patterns

*  Understanding Crochet Diagrams

* Crocheting in the Round

* Crocheting basic stitches

* Crochet techniques

I am including these in my course.   I will also have a bonus video for Blog members.   If there are any other things you want to include please write it down in the comments below.

Update 4:   Lots of you have asked for sewing videos.   I want to be able to narrow down what type of sewing videos you want to see.   Please write your preferences using 1, 2, 3 for your preference.

*  Understanding a sewing machine (what do all those dials do?)

* How to use sewing patterns

* Quilting Lessons

* Sewing basic garments

* Sewing formal dresses

* Sewing bags

I will use that information in order to make videos that you want to watch.

I appreciate your patience and help with the survey.   Write down your comments below.

XOXO,

Yolanda
