Health Benefits of Crocheting: More Than Just a Hobby

Stress Relief: How Crochet Soothes the Mind and Body is something that still seems a sort of mystery to me but it is undeniable.  Crocheting has allowed me to reduce stress in my life.  After my stroke this past April crocheting and knitting have allowed me to keep a handle on the stress in my life and have allowed my body to heal.

Boosting Brain Power: The Cognitive Benefits of Learning New Stitches has allowed my poor damaged brained (due to stroke) to build new pathways in my brain.  Learning to stitch all over again has helped to restore my brain power.

The Joy of Creation: Crochet is Fostering Self-Esteem and a Sense of Accomplishment that I feared were lost forever.

Connecting with Others:  Crochet builds  Community Through Crochet Circles whether this be in person or an online community Crochet can  create real connections.  I have personally spoken to many people that tell me they feel less isolated and more connected to others thru their crochet hobby. During the lockdowns of the recent Covid pandemics online forums were very helpful, critical most to keeping a lot of people sane.  Don’t be fooled some real friendships can develop thru these connections.  If you haven’t joined any online crochet groups give one a try and see if it might be a good fit for you.

Mindfulness and Meditation: Crocheting also seems to bring about a sense of mindfulness almost like a quiet meditation.  The rhythm of your hook gently gliding over your yarn seems to put me into a relaxed meditative tase.

A Poem I wrote

Since today is Friday I wanted to share something different with all of you.  This is a short poem I wrote a few years ago.  I am no poet but I enjoy putting my thoughts down on paper especially after those “lightbulb” moments.   I hope you enjoy it and that it helps make your day a a little better.  I love you all so much.  You are the reason I keep creating.

The Path
By:   Yolanda Soto-Lopez

The path is clear for I now can see.
This truth has been here all along.
Unknown by most and loved by some,
Yet few will ever really perceive.

I try to deny it or make any excuse, yet now I too can see.
The life that I live, is the life I create….It’s really all up to me.

No one else,  just me…
and the truth of this now sets me free.
No other can go, for I alone
can hear the call  for it is my own.

So I swallow my pride and I conquer my fears
and I try to release all the good that’s within me.

I wear a smile.  I fight back the tears,
for the time has now come to steer my own  ship.

None other can go or plot my course
for that task is for me alone.
Its time to go forth for the truth is now clear,
that time has now come to finally be Me”.

Great News! The Odds ARE stacked in your favor!

Choosing Yarns from my yarn shelves

Yarn Storage

I have some Great News for you.  The Odds are stacked in your favor!

I wanted to share something little different with you today.  This is a post from an old blog I used to have a few years ago.  With all the pressure of being liked and with social media our self-esteeem and self love can really take a toll.  Being able to judge yourself fairly is oftentimes difficult.  We seem to be our own worse critics.  What others might see as minor flaws when we see ourselves we are much more critical with ourselves than we are with others.  The good news is that the odds are stacked in your favor.  I don’t usually share personal thoughts but I hope you enjoy it.    I originally shared this back in 2011.

10 Tips For Crocheters and Knitters. Can you guess what they are?

Here are my 10 Tips for Crocheters and Knitters:

Crocheting and knitting are two of my favorite pastimes.  I really enjoy spending my time in a comfy chair with my yarn and hook (or needles).  So many people ask me to give them some tips for becoming great crocheters or knitters.   Here is some advise/ tips that I would like to share with you.  They might be different from what you’ve heard before but as many might know I feel that if you’re not having fun you’re not doing it right.  Fiber arts for me is about being able to express  my creativity in a positive way.  It’s about enjoying myself regardless of what others may think.  I have been crocheting for over 40 years.  When I was a young woman in my early 20’s people would always make the dumb commends such as, “Why do you crochet?  Isn’t that for grandmas?”   Well, I didn’t care I kept going.  Now I can say that yes I am a grandma and I am still crocheting and knitting.  Although I must confess that neither crochet or knitting are my strongest craft..can you guess what it is?  Well.. It’ sewing and quilting.  I can really rock a sewing machine.  (Without meaning to sound vain of course).  My mother taught me to sew when I was just 6 years old and those times sewing together with my mother are some of the happiest memories of my childhood.  Thank you mother for taking time to allow  me to enjoy my creativity.

Ok, onto the tips.  They are not in order of important I just had to write  them down.

Can You Really Use Social Media to grow your Business? Yes, you can!

Using Social Media to Grow Your Business.  Here are a few tips.

It seems that everyday another social media platform comes around.   With so many platforms out there it can be confusing and even overwhelming.  For people like myself who are technology challenged it can seem even worst.   Sometimes I just want to put my head down and hide.   I must admit that I’m not the type of person who jumps on the bandwagon quickly.  I’m not what you would call an early adopter.   This has actually been a good and a bad thing.  On the good side: Did you know that recently a new app or was it a platform (I don’t know but doesn’t matter now) known as “Peach”  actually launched and went out of business within a few hours of launching their business. (Read article here )  On the bad side:  I am sometimes the last to get on board and get on board kinda late.   However with time I have come to realize that this is the world I now live in.  A world where everything seems to scream out for my attention.  What is a woman to do?
