Easy Crochet Unicorn Beanie / Hat

This easy crochet Unicorn Beanie / Hat has been requested so many times.  Having been feeling under the weather with some pretty serious health issues, I really didn’t feel like making any new projects.  Now that I am feeling a little better I decided to start to go thru my request list once again.  At the top of that list crocheting an Easy Crochet Unicorn Beanie / Hat sounded like a fun project.   I used several colors to make the mane of the Unicorn.  You can choose your own colors.   The yarns that I have used are all from RedHeart Supersaver yarns but you can choose whichever brand you prefer as long as it is a medium weight yarn.

Crochet hats are so fun to crochet.  This hat uses basic stitches and it’s a great way to use up all your colorful yarn scraps.  Most of the yarns I used are from left-over skeins from my latest amigurumi book which should be available at Hobby Lobby stores very soon.  (I can’t wait to let you all know about it.)  It seems like most people I meet hate to waste yarn.

Crocheting this hat was fun but most of all it was easy to make.  I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Infant- Size E Hook, Babies Size Fhook, Toddler Size G hook. To crochet a beanie for an older child use a size H hook and a medium weight worsted yarn. For adults you can use a size J hook and a heavier weight of yarn (maybe even a chunky weight. The pattern is the same for all sizes. Only the size of hook and weight of yarn changes. This makes beanie pattern for all sizes. From Baby – adult size. Follow the same pattern

To begin Crochet Unicorn Beanie / Hat:

Using white yarn (or color of your choice) and a 5.5 mm hook (Size I)

Horn (make 1):  (change to whichever color you prefer).  Use a 5.0 mm or H size hook.  Please note that you will be working in rounds.  Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round:

Magic circle,  chain 1, 4 single crochet into circle, pull shut

R2: 1 single crochet into each stitch (remember to use your stitch marker)

Rnd 3: *single crochet in next stitch, 2 single crochet*, repeat from * to *

Round 4: 1 single crochet in each stitch

R5:  *single crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 single crochet*, repeat from * to *

Rnd 6: 1 single crochet in each stitch

Round 7:  *single crochet in next 3 stitches, 2 single crochet*, repeat from * to *

Lightly stuff the horn using poly-fil.  Do not over-stuff the horn as you do not want the poly-fil to show thru your stitches.

Easy Crochet Unicorn Beanie / Hat (Continued)

Curly Q’s  aka  Corkscrews. (make 12) –  I made 2 curly q’s of each color for a total of 12 curly q’s.  You can make more or less depending on how long and full you want your mane.

Leaving a tail of approximately 10 inches Chain 20,  beginning on the 2nd chain from the hook (loop on the hook doesn’t count as a chain) work 3 single crochets into each chain.  Fasten off after the last stitch and sew in tails.   You will need to shape your curly q’s with your hand.  The YouTUbe video tutorial will show you how to do this along with all the other steps for this hat.

If you prefer to have shorter Curly Q’s in the front part of the Unicorn face you can chain a total of 14 chains and then begin your 3 single crochet into each chain.  You can adjust the length of your curly q’s by changing the number of beginning chains.

Putting it all together:

Sewing on the Horn: Using a basic hand whip stitch sew the horn to the hat.   Put the hat on the person who will be wearing it.  Now you can use a stitch marker to mark the position of where you want your horn to go.  You can use the rounds of your hat as a guideline

Adding the Curly Q’s:  Using a crochet hook… pull the tail of each curly q thru to the back of the hat.  I lined mine up to form a line from just above the center of the horn and continuing to the top and back of hat.  Alternate the colors of your Curly Q’s to give added interest.  Once you have pulled 2 tails of the curly q’s go ahead and tie them to the inside of the hat.

Curly Q placement guide  here:

Sleeping Eye embroidery (Optional) Using black yarn:   Put your hat on and use a stitch marker to mark where you want your eye to go.  Using an embroidery backstitch I outlined a sleeping eye and added eyelashes.  You leave it without eyes if you prefer.

Yolanda, this is so fun. I’m definitely making it and thinking of finding some metallic or glittery yarn for some of the curly Qs! One question – for those, you say sc in the instructions but hdc in the video. Which works better? Thanks!
