Crochet Cactus as home decor are such a fun project. These little crochet cactus are a great way to use up your yarn scraps. Using different shades of green also helps to make them more interesting and realistic. I love the fact that the supplies needed for this project are inexpensive and easy to find. You can make several of them and place them on a window sill or on a mantle. Mix them in with “real” plants for fun.
These little Crochet Cactus don’t require watering, any maintenance and best of all they are Ouchie Free. If Ouchie a word? Well it was around my house when my kids were growing up. I hope you enjoy this project. Be sure to share this post with your friends and family. Keep reading to get more info and the free written pattern. (I have uploaded a video tutorial if you prefer to watch the video on the last page of this post ).
I recently went on a trip to Texas. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a fun trip. My uncle passed away and we traveled to attend his funeral. While traveling we did stop at several rest areas and shops. I kept seeing small bowls of different types of cacti. They are so pretty but I was apprehensive about all the thorns. I didn’t feel comfortable having to store them up in a box (they wrap them in newspapers) and then unwrapping them when we got home. I did love the idea of having a few and how beautiful they look. Several even having little flowers. What’s a great to do? Crochet your own of course. Here is what I came up with.
You will need the following supplies for your Crochet Cactus:
scraps of yarn in various shades of green (you can make them all one shade)
Scraps of colorful yarn for the flowers (flowers are optional)
polyfiber stuffing (you can also use cotton)
1 small glass container (I purchased mine at my local Dollar Tree store)
small pebbles ((I purchased mine at my local Dollar Tree store)
Crochet Hook size H/ 5.0mm for the cactus
Crochet Hook size B / 2.25mm for flowers
bamboo cooking skewers or straws (to hold cactus inside the rocks)
To begin (1st style crochet cactus)
To begin: ch 13, hdc in each stitch beginning in the 2nd chain from hook (12 hdc st)
row 2 – 10: ch 2, turn work over (working in back loops only) hdc in ea st
After row 10 fold your piece in half. Now you will join your cactus to create a tube. You will work a slip stitch in each stitch (both layers) to close your work up. If you prefer you can join by sewing it together. Leave a tail.
Thread your yarn tail into a yarn needle. Gather along the top edge and pull shut. I put a few stitches across the top to make sure the top is close. Knot, and pull your yarn into the inside of the cactus. Cut yarn. Set aside for now.

I have made every effort to ensure this is an accurate pattern with no errors. If you find one please let me know so that I can correct it. Thanks

Section 1 of style 2 cactus (the small piece)
To begin: magic circle, ch 1, 6 sc into circle, pull shut
round 2: (use stitch marker) *sc, 2 sc*, rep from * to * to end of round
round 3 – 8: sc in each stitch, fasten off.. leave tail to sew piece onto cactus. Thread your tail with your yarn needle.. and lightly gather the open edge. Now sew this small piece onto the larger piece of your cactus. (See photo). Now you are ready to add flowers if you like. Continue to next page for flower instructions.
Flowers: (Optional) Choose the color of your choice. Remember only 1 color to be used on each Crochet Cactus if you add more than one flower to each.
(Switch to hook B / 2.25mm. )
to begin: Magic loop, ch 1, 6sc into circle, pull shut
round 2: (use stitch marker) *[sl st into next st, ch 2, 2dc, ch2, sl st]*, 1st petal formed, rep * to * until you have 5 petals. Fasten off after 5th petal.. sew in tail.
Using the tail that was created from the magic loop (your beginning tail).. sew your flowers onto both of your cactus. You can add a french knot into center of flower with a different color if you like. This is optional
3rd style cactus (the small one that is in front – see photo). You repeat the instructions for Section 1 of style 2 cactus (the small piece) instructions above.
Finishing the Crochet Cactus decor:
Using polyfil (after you have attached your flowers). Lightly stuff your cactus pieces. With matching color yarn thread a strand of matching yarn (approx. 10 inches long) and gather the bottom edge of cactus. Before closing cut a piece of bamboo skewer (you can use a straw, wooden dowel, of popsicle stick) and insert to the center of your cactus. Now pull your yarn shut, secure with a knot and trim tail.
Fill your glass container with your small pebbles to your desired height. Now using the bamboo skewer edge.. stick your cactus into the rock filled container. The wooden edge will help keep your cactus in place. Arrange cactus as you prefer. Please see photo as a reference.
You are done! Enjoy your new Crochet Cactus decor. No plant maintenance and they are ouch free!
